“Jezebel.”
Even if you don’t remember the full story, you know that if someone is called “Jezebel” that it is not a compliment!
In 1 Kings, it says that “There was never anyone like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, urged on by Jezebel his wife.” Interesting fact: the original Jezebel had a lot in common with the cults in America today. She most likely participated in Satanic child sacrifices. We know for sure she worshiped Baal (a.k.a Molech) who was known for sacrificing children alive in fire. Baal was just one of the many disguises for Satan. We know this because Baal was associated with divination and fortune telling via “the spirits.”
Jezebel’s merciless edicts came from empty promises within the occult.
As the story progresses, we find Jezebel conniving to steal a plot of land for her spoiled husband, and gleefully murdering the man who stood in her way.
“But Jezebel, his wife came to him and said to him, “Why is your spirit so vexed that you eat no food?” And he said to her, “Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite and said to him, ‘Give me your vineyard for money, or else, if it please you, I will give you another vineyard for it.’ And he answered, ‘I will not give you my vineyard.’” And Jezebel his wife said to him, “Do you now govern Israel? Arise and eat bread and let your heart be cheerful; I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.”
So she wrote letters in Ahab's name and sealed them with his seal, and she sent the letters to the elders and the leaders who lived with Naboth in his city. And she wrote in the letters, “Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth at the head of the people. And set two worthless men opposite him, and let them bring a charge against him, saying, ‘You have cursed[a] God and the king.’ Then take him out and stone him to death.” And the men of his city, the elders and the leaders who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent word to them. As it was written in the letters that she had sent to them, they proclaimed a fast and set Naboth at the head of the people. And the two worthless men came in and sat opposite him. And the worthless men brought a charge against Naboth in the presence of the people, saying, “Naboth cursed God and the king.” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death with stones. Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, “Naboth has been stoned; he is dead.”
With each murder, she became more and more terrible. Her worst escapade was killing the prophets of God, and the persecution was so bad, hundreds of them hid in caves. There seemed to be no accountability to her power.
Full-grown men feared her, even Elijah, one of the most powerful prophets, ran for his life! This was a woman who didn’t know the sanctity for human life. Her maternal instinct was non-existent, the only regard she had was for her own power.
Why am I writing about this?
Because God promises us that evil times won't last forever. Wrongdoings will have justice. I wanted to share this story about Jezebel because these kinds of women always exist and always will, but we can't let them overwhelm us. We can't believe this is the only time in history bad people have ever held power. The “good people” are not all gone, they are just in hiding like the prophets Jezebel persecuted so long ago.
This story is a good reminder to those of us who feel on the losing side. There will be times when the lights have gone out, but God is the light that never extinguishes. In His timing, they will come back on. The days of evildoers are very short in the scheme of time, and when evil does end, we need to be ready to fill Jezebel's empty places of leadership.
Right now we are witnessing a “Dynasty of Jezebels” in our nation. Frankly, I don’t know if history records more Jezebels than we have right now. Hollywood bred the Kardashian family which envelops false beauty, sensuality, and drama. We have a murderous child abuser, Ghislaine Maxwell, in jail awaiting trial after a full career lived without accountability. Female celebrities, who should be leading us in a movement to protect children, are silent on Maxwell’s case and human trafficking! They are even more silent on occult activity that their names are associated with. We have female politicians void of motherly instincts, who have misused their power to protect guilty pedophiles and perpetrators. Over 40million women and children are missing globally right now, and some reports say that their perpetrators are predominantly women. And yet, our female leadership is silent. We see the violent riots, looting, angry conversations between leaders, name-calling, disagreements on masks, and vaccines: the darkness seems so deep.
These sorts of women who seek their own power and have no regard for the lives of others, are “Jezebels.”
I want to encourage my readers to remember that your light, your acts of truth, kindness, and decency are far more powerful than any villain or regime in the world. God’s light within us is the cure! His work within you is more powerful than you imagine, and rest assured that God did not create you to sit on the sidelines to just watch. You have a calling to make a difference in a dark world by using the voice, talents, and gifts God gave you.
Ephesians 6: 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.
Jezebels:
can hurt thousands of innocent people along the way.
can try to change history.
can cause pain.
can hold incredible power.
But in the end, they lose it all in a single moment and their names become curses for future generations.
Evil is self-destructive. It is not self-sustainable.
The end of Jezebel's story unfolds in 2 Kings 9.
30 When Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it. And she painted her eyes and adorned her head and looked out of the window. 31 And as Jehu entered the gate, she said, “Is it peace, you Zimri, murderer of your master?” 32 And he lifted up his face to the window and said, “Who is on my side? Who?” Two or three eunuchs looked out at him. 33 He said, “Throw her down.” So they threw her down. And some of her blood spattered on the wall and on the horses, and they trampled on her. 34 Then he went in and ate and drank. And he said, “See now to this cursed woman and bury her, for she is a king's daughter.” 35 But when they went to bury her, they found no more of her than the skull and the feet and the palms of her hands. 36 When they came back and told him, he said, “This is the word of the Lord, which he spoke by his servant Elijah the Tishbite: ‘In the territory of Jezreel the dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezebel, 37 and the corpse of Jezebel shall be as dung on the face of the field in the territory of Jezreel, so that no one can say, This is Jezebel.’”
Jezebels will always exist in the world. But we don’t have to fear them. The evil we see today in front of us won’t last forever. I know many people who are fearful, afraid, and on edge. For those of us who have moments of impending doom and fear, we can hold onto this promise:
Psalm 37: 1-4
Fret not yourself because of evildoers;
be not envious of wrongdoers!
For they will soon fade like the grass
and wither like the green herb.
Trust in the Lord, and do good;
dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
We don’t have the luxury to fear.
We don’t get the privilege of hiding.
We have the responsibility to discover God’s desires for our life, then bravely full them. Only then can we separate ourselves from the darkness of this world and live in His light.
